Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef or pork or your choice of ground meat
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs for binding
  • 1 large egg to hold the meat mixture together
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 package crescent roll dough or puff pastry, sliced into thin strips
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground meat, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix everything together until well integrated and the mixture feels sticky yet manageable.
  3. Shape the meat mixture into small, roughly 1.5-inch diameter meatballs, placing them evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake the meatballs in the oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are cooked through and develop a slight crust. Let them cool slightly once done.
  5. While the meatballs are baking, cut the crescent roll dough into thin strips, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide. These will become the mummy bandages.
  6. Gently brush the baked meatballs with a bit of olive oil to help the dough bandages stick and get a crispy finish.
  7. Wrap each meatball with strips of dough, overlapping slightly to mimic mummy bandages. Leave small gaps to look like bandaged mummies.
  8. Place the wrapped meatballs back on the baking sheet and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is golden and crispy.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Use small dollops of mustard or cream cheese to add tiny 'eyes' on each mummy for a spooky touch.
  10. Serve the mummy meatballs warm, with your favorite dipping sauces or a side of autumn vegetables for a fun and festive presentation.

Notes

For extra creepiness, add small edible eyes made from olives or cheese before baking. If you prefer, use store-bought crescent roll dough for faster preparation. Be sure to watch closely during baking to prevent over-browning of the dough scarves.
