Ingredients

  • 2 ounces smoky tequila preferably reposado or aƱejo
  • 1 ounce lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 0.5 teaspoon black food coloring or as needed to achieve a deep black color
  • 0.25 teaspoon simple syrup optional for a touch of sweetness

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Rimming plate or small dish
  • Measuring jigger
  • Strainer
  • Lime citrus press or juicer
  • Small spoon or stirrer

Method

  1. Prepare the rim by rubbing a lime wedge around the edge of your glass, then dip it into a plate of coarse salt or sugar to coat evenly. Set aside.
  2. Add tequila, freshly squeezed lime juice, black food coloring, and simple syrup (if using) into a cocktail shaker.
  3. Seal the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for about 10-15 seconds until the mixture is well combined and begins to turn a deep, uniform black color, and you hear a light clink of ice or ingredients mixing.
  4. Unseal the shaker and strain the cocktail into your prepared glass, pouring slowly to avoid disturbing the rim.
  5. Garnish with a lime wedge or a twist of lime peel for a pop of color, and serve immediately.

Notes

Adjust the amount of black food coloring to achieve your desired darkness. For a more smoky flavor, opt for a darker, more robust tequila. The rim can be customized with salt or sugar, depending on your preference.
